Welcome to MyOcarina!! From Earth to Song -- a make-at-home kit to design & build your own ocarina, a playable wind instrument, from clay! Dry it, then bake it in your oven at home, and you'll have an instrument that will play & play.
MyOcarina
Design and build your own "professional" 5-hole clay flute at home! You'll be able to play many songs & perform them with other instruments.
Now you can make your own ocarina at home, shaped from clay and designed by you. You bake it in your oven at home, at low temperature. Many songs are playable on your 6-note Ocarina. A 17-song collection is included (sheet music & ocarina fingering charts) to get you started. A Holiday collection, a Folk Music Songbook & more can be ordered separately. The fingering charts make the songs playable on all ocarinas that have at least a 6-note range.
Note for Musicians: the songs are written in the key of G, and would need to be transposed to accompany an ocarina that has a tuning other than G. The MyOcarina kit makes a G ocarina (in the key of G).
The MyOcarina Kit includes everything required to design, build, decorate and play the flute. The specially designed clay bakes in a standard oven at no more than 350 degrees (for about 2 hours). The equipment included allows the flute to be easily made to play standard notes. The 17-song book uses basic finger positions & charts as well as standard notation to teach the music. MyOcarina makes a unique gift for the artist, musician, those interested in learning about music and who enjoy individualized gifts. A great gift for the ocarina enthusiast as well!
Stephen Foster's "Oh Susanna" on G Ocarina with violin & cello (performed by Susquehanna, filmed by Wilkum Studios)
The ocarina (oh-ka-ree-na), made out of clay, belongs to the ancient family of musical instruments called "vessel flutes" for their rounded appearance rather than long tubular shape. Made in a variety of shapes and sizes, these round flutes were used for rituals, courtships, celebrations, and for communication over long distances. Many were designed in a turtle shape, others as individualized totem animals or other designs.
While the MyOcarina craft kit makes a surprisingly beautiful sounding ocarina, it does not replace the intricate work of master builders such as Mr. C.A. Guo (at Song of Nature) or Songbird Ocarinas (see "links & resources" page). But it makes a great introduction to the fascinating world of instrument building!
To use the instrument in it’s historical perspective, you could come up with your own “call” on your ocarina, teach it to your friends, and use it to let them know you are nearby.
